Prenatal Health Fair Sheduled Saturday PDF Print E-mail

A prenatal health fair called Project Cradle Care will be held in conjunction with National Birth Defects Month from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The event is sponsored by the Augusta chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in partnership with the March of Dimes. Women of childbearing age are invited to the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center, 1833 Broad St., for information on pregnancy, birth defects and infant care.

One in eight babies is born prematurely in the United States, according to the March of Dimes. The rate of premature birth has increased by 20 percent since the early 1990s and is the number one cause of death during a baby’s first month of life.

Michigan Sorors Dedicate Week to HIV/AIDS Awareness PDF Print E-mail

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. and Community AIDS Resource and Education Services will commemorate National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day through a series of events:

Monday will be the official start of the nationwide commemoration. Public service announcements through CARES’ YouTube channel will focus on getting educated, tested and involved locally to stop the spread of the infection.

On Feb. 11, sorority members will get publicly tested for HIV to encourage testing in Kalamazoo. The symbolic testing will start at 1 p.m. at CARES, 629 Pioneer St.; regular HIV testing will be offered until 5 p.m.

Members of the public are invited to attend and witness this event so they are able to tell their friends about the ease of HIV testing.

On Feb. 12, sorority members and CARES will conclude the week’s observance with the Third Annual Black Love Event at FIRE, 1249 Portage St. Dance, poetry and song focusing on HIV/AIDS education, awareness and treatment with be featured, with local talent Nathan Moore and The Neon Tetris headlining the event.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is the only African American Sorority among the partners of the Center For Disease Control and Prevention’s successful initiative targeting communities hardest hit by HIV.  The Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative (AAALI) was launched in 2009 to bring together the nations leading black organizations to intensify HIV prevention among African Americans.

As a part of the Sorority’s signature program, Project Reasurrance, Sigma Gamma Rho has worked with Africare to address through finances and education HIV/AIDS awareness, education and treatment for African women. The sorority has also promoted testing and awareness and its partnership now with AAALI will further its efforts to educate African American women by helping them to make Healthy Choices.

Over the past year, AAALI has had significant success and everyone must and can play a part:
o    Get the Facts about HIV (visit www.actagainstaids.org)
o    Get Tested (call 1-800-CDC-info or hivtest.org to find a site near you)
o    Get Talking about HIV – talk to your friends, your family, your kids; talk, text and tweet about it
