Sigma Gamma Rho Launches Survey To Measure Tolerance of Teen Pregnancy PDF Print E-mail

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has joined forces with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy to launch a survey to measure current attitudes toward teen pregnancy in adults 18 and above. The online survey is powered by Qualtrics and will be available from September 15th through November 15, 2010.
The survey asks one question: “Why is Teen pregnancy more socially acceptable today then it was 30 years ago?” Securing quantitative data related to the “perceived” changes in mindset and tolerance of teen pregnancy over the past three decades is the goal of the survey. The ultimate goal is to use the data to find solutions pertaining to the rate of teenage pregnancy in the African American community.

While rates of teenage pregnancy have been declining, the National Campaign reports that:
o    Teen mothers are less likely to graduate from high school
o    3 out of 10 teenage girls become pregnant at least once before age 20
o    The percentage of teen pregnancy in the United States is the highest in the industrialized world.
Children born to teenage parents are more likely to have low birth weight, receive an interrupted or inadequate education, live in poverty and be incarcerated.

“Our partnership with the National Campaign To Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy allows Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc to continue to work with agencies to reduce teen pregnancy which is the mission of our Project Reassurance program,” said Delia Askew, Survey Committee Chair.
